Where Georgians are moving in Florida
Jacksonville and the First Coast
The closest big Florida city to Atlanta and Savannah, with beaches, a strong job market and plenty of space for the money. St. Augustine, Fernandina Beach and Ponte Vedra are popular nearby choices.
The Panhandle and Emerald Coast
Tallahassee, Panama City Beach, Destin and Pensacola are a short drive from Georgia. Many Atlantans already know them from vacations. Note that the area west of the Apalachicola River is on Central Time.
Orlando and Tampa
The two largest metros in Central Florida, with growing job markets, newer suburbs and theme-park or Gulf Coast lifestyles.
South and Southwest Florida
Naples, Fort Myers, Miami and Fort Lauderdale are the longest trips from Georgia, but popular with retirees and anyone who wants truly tropical weather.
Short distance, real planning
A Georgia to Florida move is short by interstate standards, but it's still an interstate move. That means:
- Federal rules apply: your mover should have a USDOT number and provide a written estimate and the federal "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move" information.
- Pricing is usually by weight or volume, not hourly like a local move, so decluttering still saves money.
- Fast delivery is often possible. Many routes can be loaded one day and delivered the next. Ask whether yours qualifies.
See our Florida moving cost guide for the factors that move your price.
Metro Atlanta moving logistics
- Traffic: schedule loading to avoid rush hour on I-75, I-85 and I-285. Crew time is part of your cost.
- HOAs and apartments: many communities in Alpharetta, Marietta, Johns Creek, Decatur and Peachtree City set move hours. Apartments often require elevator or loading-dock reservations and a certificate of insurance.
- Hills and driveways: steep north Georgia driveways may need extra crew time or a smaller truck. Mention them up front.
Timing your move
- Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 in Florida. Keep your dates flexible (see our hurricane-season checklist).
- Snowbird season (roughly October to April) brings heavy demand into Florida, so book early.
- School calendars: summer is the busiest season for family moves, so midweek dates are easier to get.
Becoming a Florida resident
- Get a Florida driver license, generally within 30 days of becoming a resident.
- Title and register your vehicle in Florida, generally within 10 days of establishing residency.
- Apply for Florida's homestead exemption by March 1 if you buy a primary home.
- Florida has no state personal income tax. Ask a tax professional about your final Georgia part-year return.
- Update your address with the USPS, IRS, banks and insurers, and register to vote.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to move from Atlanta to Florida?
Most Atlanta to Florida moves are 300 to 700 miles, or about 5 to 10 hours of driving. Many shipments are loaded one day and delivered the next. Longer moves to South Florida, or shared loads, may take a few days.
How much does it cost to move from Georgia to Florida?
Because the distance is shorter, Georgia to Florida moves usually cost less than moves from the Northeast or Midwest. Price still depends on how much you move, access at both homes, dates and services like packing. An inventory-based quote gives you a real number.
Is a move from Georgia to Florida considered long distance?
Yes. Any move across state lines is an interstate move, regulated by the federal government. Your mover should have a USDOT number and give you a written estimate, even for a short trip like Savannah to Jacksonville.
What part of Florida is closest to Atlanta?
The Florida Panhandle (Tallahassee, Panama City Beach, Destin) and Jacksonville are the closest, at roughly 300 to 350 miles. Part of the western Panhandle is in the Central Time Zone, one hour behind Atlanta.
Will I save on state taxes moving from Georgia to Florida?
Florida has no state personal income tax, while Georgia does. Ask a tax professional about filing your final Georgia return as a part-year resident.
